1 · The Baseline

For the first 30 years of the 20th century, the global temperature anomaly still sat relatively low. The industrial era had already started, but the full warming effect had not yet taken hold. This is also around the time when reliable global temperature records begin and thus also where our dataset starts.

Baseline (0°C): the 1900–1929 average.

2 · The Shift

After 1950 the temperature anomaly departs consistently above the 1900–1929 baseline. Decadal averages increase steadily, reflecting the growing radiative forcing from greenhouse gases and the gradual loss of earlier natural variability.

3 · Emergence of Extremes

The pre-1990 disaster map displays the spatial distribution of recorded climate and weather events. Each mark is scaled by inflation-adjusted economic loss and classified by hazard type, showing where the first measurable impacts concentrate.

4 · The Modern Crisis

Extending the record to 2026 reveals a broader geographic footprint and larger aggregate losses. The updated map reflects both increased event frequency and the rising economic exposure of populated regions.

5 · The Economic Toll

Decadal aggregation clarifies the trend in economic loss. The stacked totals increase at an accelerating rate, with hydrometeorological hazards contributing the largest share of recorded damages.
